Overseas studies

Experience in Europe, England, Israel, and Asia. Invitation to Maritime Museum Paris, 1987; Guest at the Art Centre Ubud, Indonesia, 1993; Thailand 1995; Turkey 1995; Official tour to Hong Kong,1995 -Exhibition funded by International Cultural Relations Branch of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; Project in Borneo on environment. 1996.

Pamela Griffith was born in Australia into an artistic family. She trained as an Art Teacher at Sydney Teacher's College and East Sydney Technical College and received the Art 1V Prize for first place throughout the course. At a later date she completed a Bachelor of Art (Ed) at Alexander Mackie Art School, Sydney. She has taught in Secondary Schools, Technical Colleges, Colleges of Advanced Education, Universities and privately In her own studio and numerous community workshops throughout Australia.

Pamela Griffith believes Art is to be enjoyed and she accepts the challenge to reach every one. In this spirit she designed the compact disc cover for the jazz group Galapagos Duck, entitled "Lonely George".

The Department of Foreign Affairs supported her Exhibition in Hong Kong when she and Don Harper and his jazz group represented Australia in 1995.

The etchings produced for this project illustrate a compact disc of his music "Images of Australia" produced by the ABC.

Many people remember the toile fabrics Pamela designed for the Australian Bicentenary and the Beatification of Mary MacKillop.

The Pope made particular mention of the beauty of the Mary MacKillop fabric in the Powerhouse Museum collection when he visited Australia.

The current licensees from the Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW have watercolour Waratahs on them, designed by Pamela, who worked with the team who created this high technology card.

In 2001 Pamela designed a hanging embroidery for the Foundation for Creative Enterprise that was made possible by the award of an Australian Commonwealth Government Federation Grant.

The Creative Embroiderers of the Penrith Valley completed the project in 2001.

It was unveiled at The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith, by the Governor General of Australia, His Excellency the Right Reverend Dr Peter Hollingworth AC OBE.

Hazelhurst Regional Gallery honored Pamela by showing her work across painting, watercolour and printmaking. This survey show was assembled by External Curator Prof Joanna Mendelssohn, College of Fine Arts, UNSW. The Exhibition was opened by Alan Jones in April 2005.

Pamela has also had one woman shows at Bundaberg Regional Gallery and at Fairfield City Gallery( Curated by director Gavin Fry). The work she did on the Lord Howe Island Suite was featured by the Riverina Regional Gallery in 2006.

The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet commissioned Pamela to produce one of three iconic images of Australia for inclusion in a folio presented to the 21 Heads of Nations attending APEC 2007 in Sydney, as a gift from the people of Australia. The limited edition of her book "Australia - an artist's journey through the landscape" was also presented to the Economic Heads of the 21 member nations of APEC.

Pamela's main vocation is in the creation of original works of art in oil and acrylic, as well as limited edition Graphics. Pamela has produced over 300 editions of etchings and lithographs, capitalizing on her undoubted talent as a draughtswoman. She currently also produces some 20 to 30 major paintings each year, principally in oils, but including acrylics, water-colours and pastels where the subject is better suited to those media. Her subject matter ranges across still life, landscape (often with an environmental theme) and portraiture.

Artist Statement
Whilst I have always been a versatile artist producing portraits, still life paintings and landscapes in various mediums that include oil, water colour and etchings I have always been very preoccupied with travel and landscape. When researching my book " Australia, an artist's journey through the landscape" I became aware of how few iconic images Australians have to celebrate our nation as we have only been in this place a short time. I live near the Royal National Park which is the second oldest National park in the world, so I have generated some landscapes from this area to add to my impressions of Australia. Since colonial times Sydney-siders have toured the park and it was a favourite spot to take a "car for a spin" in the early days of the automobile. The old boat-shed at Audley Weir is where so many Australians met and had picnics so I felt obliged to paint it in a representational manner befitting its history. I shall always be looking at ways of expressing my love for Australia. I like to take a broad sweep in my paintings then examine the subject thoroughly in drawing and etchings.

limited edition graphics

PHOTO (right): Pamela Griffith with two of her etchings:

  • Kangaroos at the Devils Marbles

  • Barramundi in the Billabong

A Limited Edition Print is derived from an image produced from a block, a plate, a stone, on zinc, copper or some similar surface on which the artist has worked closely with a print maker or master printer. Unlike paintings or drawings, Graphics exist in multiples. The total number of impressions an artist decides to make for any one image is called an edition. Each impression in an edition is numbered and personally signed by the artist.

An image may be based on an original painting, 'after an oil', or the artist (as in the case of Arthur Boyd) may paint "maquettes" specifically for Graphics. The artist may also create an image directly onto the plates, depending upon the chosen medium.

Each of the various methods of printmaking yields a distinct appearance. Artists choose a specific technique in order to achieve a desired result. The choice made by the artist to produce an image "in print" is the same as choosing to work in oil or any other medium. The only difference in print lies in the possibility of producing a number of near identical images.

Etching

Etching begins with a metal plate, usually of copper, that has been covered with a waxy surface called a "ground". The artist creates a composition by drawing through the ground to expose the metal. The plate is then immersed in an acid bath that chemically dissolves the exposed lines. The ground is then removed, ink is introduced into the incised lines and the plate is wiped clean. The plate is then covered with dampened paper and run through a press under great pressure in order to force the paper into the lines, resulting in the raised characteristic of etching.
