STEPHEN A GLASSBOROW Sculptor Biography

Stephen Glassborow is one of the most successful and most important Australian artists. He specializes in making Sculptures in Bronze, exhibiting widely around the world.

Stephen Glassborow is a sculptor who makes the classical medium of bronze accessible to a contemporary audience. He uses whimsy, abstraction and colour to bring a unique and engaging energy to his work. Glassborow’s attitude towards bronze kicks against the mainstream. The apparent levity of his pieces belies his determination to bring a fresh perspective to an ancient art form.

By playing with words and toying with gravity, Glassborow converts ideas into three dimensional trapeze acts. His work is in demand worldwide and Glassborow exhibits regularly in Australia and Europe. His work is featured in collections in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, England and the USA.

Stephen Glassborow sculptures possess a power of delusion as they delight in their interpretations of the world around us. Glassborow uses the human figure like a coat hanger, onto which displays his ideas. In each sculpture, the artist likes to manipulate and capture the figure in a blend of real and abstract.

Emphatically playful and frequently deriving their inspiration from phrases of popular culture, one can recognize the influence of Art Deco and Greco Roman figurative sculpture in Stephen’s work however, Stephen Glassborow retains a very contemporary perspective.

Glassborow’s career has developed to a point where he now sells his work in many countries. He exhibits regularly in the States and the UK, and he has public works in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpar, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Seoul.

In Australia, Glassborow has had many exhibitions with public sculptures featuring in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Glassborow work is represented in important worldwide public and private art collections including America, England, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpar, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Seoul. In Australia, Glassborow public sculptures are featured in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Stephen Glassborow draws inspiration from Greco-Roman ruins, art deco forms as well as contemporary abstracts and presents human figures in a unique way. For him, inspiration comes with a pose, an idea or a phrase and a context. It is almost as if his figures have chosen their relationship with their environment after an initial struggle to retain their integrity. “I attempt to bend the traditional attitudes of the figure, while still retaining my view of an aesthetic balance," he says.

In each sculpture, Glassborow capture the figure in a blend of real and abstract. He uses the figure like a coat hanger, onto which displays his ideas. Glassborow develops his ideas on paper and experiments with the framework within which he can place his figures. He creates a scale drawing, from which he builds a clay original. “I'm observing the clay as it changes the human form. I am fascinated with muscles in the physique," Glassborow says. By manipulating the figure in this way, he captures it in a blend of the real and the abstract. Once complete, a silicon rubber mould for the final piece is made, normally in bronze.

Born in Hammersmith in the UK, it was while studying Fine Arts at the Brighton College of Art that he realized he preferred the physicality and structure of sculpture to the discipline of painting. So began his journey with clay, developing the myriad of skills that are required to master sculpturing. He travelled for four years exhibiting his work and releasing limited edition art deco and art nouveau figurines and lamps, both in the UK and in Australia. In 1983 he became a permanent resident of Australia
