Biography
(1858-1936)
Emma Minnie à Beckett, known as Minnie, was born at Collingwood in 1858. She was second daughter of William Arthur à Beckett and his wife of Emma Mills á Beckett, the heiress of John Mills fortune. was a successful painter and married another highly regarded painter of his day, Arthur Merric Boyd (1862-1940). They came to Melbourne in the mid 1870s and settled at Brighton and had five children.
Emma Minnie was lively, beautiful, cultivated and compassionate, she painted landscapes in Tasmania and many seascapes, but she had a particular talent for genre. At their farm at Yarra Glen she successfully painted the four seasons in a frieze around the dining-room. They both exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1891 after which they moved briefly to Paris. On their return to Melbourne in 1894 they lived at Sandringham. In 1898 their works were included in the Exhibition of Australian Art in London at the Grafton Galleries. The family travelled overseas from time to time, and spent summers in Tasmania where the scenery inspired some of Boyd's best work; they exhibited regularly with the Victorian Artists' Society. Many critics believe that Emma Minnie à Beckett (1858-1936) work to be superior to her husband's Arthur Merric Boyd (1862-1940).
